If a (supposedly) Pakistani group makes communities like "I HATE INDIA" / "INDIA MURDABAD" or the more Shakespearian types of " @#$% INDIA " the immediate reaction of we Indians is a sheer outburst of patriotism. With greater than equal to the amount of display of filth in the abuse we hurl back, job is done! we have shown who's the boss here!
The other day i came across this picture. To me, it truly conveyed a lot in a few words of satire. But unlike me, some of my very patriotic friends could not digest this insult! I became ungrateful, snob, traitor and deserved nothing less than a court martial ;)
The thing is we truly are best in thinking we are the best.India will be a superpower in 10 years! The IT Giant! Birthplace of spiritualism! nirvana! moksha! Unity in diversity! The country that produces one of the largest number of scientists! engineers!doctors! etc etc! or for that matter, has the Largest number of movie releases in the world!this is on the greener side of the grass :) pardon me if i talk about the naxals tearing apart the already bleeding borders and slaughtering civilians and army men with equal brutality and our largest democracy keeping mum for the best of its interests.Peace talks with likes of people who barge in to the extent of parliament house and laugh in our face not once, but repeatedly every year with a major act of terrorism.
Apart from this if i pan on to our individual lives, we dont hesitate a trifle to pay 200 bucks and get away with our vehicles sans authentic identification proofs or after violating traffic rules.
Sadly, the diversity isn't so united anymore.Theres an inherent mutual denial of people in the south to that of north, for instance and vice versa, and theres also a repulsion to accept Hindi as the national language.Youngsters find it "uncool" to talk in Hindi. Its so not happening! The sight of poor little kids doing dangerous acts to help make ends meet while some school kids "hangout" in Barista/CCD or some bistro in the background is too comon to stir emotions nowadays.
These are but only a few fleeting glimpses of the huge DIVIDE that exists and continues to grow within ourselves that can take us in only one direction which is pretty obvious.
I once read somewhere, "Be the change u wish to see". Small and significant self changes only can bring about the image we THINK that exists.Afterall Ignoring reality doesn't change it.
Dwelling In The Glories Of Past. Neglecting The Looming Dangers Of Future. This Is India Today. Exact Observations. Lucid Expression. Keep It Up Sanjukta.
ReplyDelete"Be the change u wish to see"
ReplyDeleteMahatma Gandhi said dat
Once u realize this and make conscious efforts to make those changes u will become Deserving enough to "Wish the change" too..
we have a LONG way to Go... Before calling ourself "Mahaan"
Even Gandhi was called Mahatma only coz he deserved to be called so not coz he claimed so!

ReplyDeleteI think what many Indians need to accept is that we are not the best in the world. Far from being the best, we are barely a few notches above the cesspools of Africa. What is first required is acceptance of that and realization that despite the rapid growth of our economy, there are still hundreds of millions left untouched by it. But well there's no denying that we have the potential for far greater things.
ReplyDeleteNext you were referring to our country being wrecked by internal dissent. I personally feel that it is the people that form a nation and not its territories or borders. At the risk of being branded a traitor id like to say the Indian state at a certain level has failed to live up to the aspirations of a section of its citizens. The inclusive society envisaged by our founding fathers failed to become that. So even though external powers might have stoked the flames of dissent, the problems are certainly home grown-for the govt and the people to deal with..
You stole the idea i was working on for my blog.....!!!!! anyways very well written. Infact all those who wish to live in fool's paradise can do so, but i have no hesitation in saying that India does not even qualify to be called a 3rd world country! it is worse than countries in Africa....corruption, lack of basic civic sense, complete lawlessness, lack of interest among people to adhere to the basic rules of living....these are vices we need to eradicate! The whole system needs to be renovated....but no one's interested. All people can do is blame our neighbours for all wrong and stay happy in a sense of self-satisfaction.
ReplyDeleteWell, this is really summary of what we together as an INDIAN are, we may be best when individuals but where is the unity(as you really rightly mentioned) when we stand together, we live in regions and not in India.. thanks for impeccable words to brush up my earlier angry mind. :)
ReplyDeletehow i wish shiv sena reads this and gets sensible..
